Venice of the Venetians – Tour of Cannaregio

• A tour of the northernmost of Venice's six districts, Cannaregio, the hidden gem of the city.

Tourists rarely take the opportunity to explore it, missing out on the chance to experience the local, peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

This is one of the private tours of Venice where many Venetians live.

We will visit the majestic Church of the Madonna dell'Orto with its unique windows and Greek marble columns supporting double pointed arches decorated with paintings by Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto, who is buried here, Fondamenta della Misericordia and the Jewish Ghetto, one of the settings of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, a neighborhood where Jews were segregated and forced to live in isolation by the government of the Venetian Republic. The ghetto was connected to the rest of the city by two bridges that were open only during daylight hours and locked at night. Today, the ghetto is still the center of Jewish life in the city, and an international conference on Hebrew studies is held there each year.

Let's visit Orsoni oven, one of the most traditional Venetian producers of authentic mosaics. The multi-colored panel, modeled on the collection of smalti and gold mosaics, was shown at the Great Exhibition in Paris along with most of the avant-garde techniques, becoming a source of inspiration for Art Nouveau artists such as Antonio Gaudi. The furnace has been using the same characteristics since 1888 to produce mosaics in 24-karat gold leaf, colored gold and Venetian smalti, and also contains a library of colors, a magical place where more than 3,500 colors of different tones and shades are presented.

Mosaic workshops for children, families and small groups are also available upon request. During the workshop, you will create a small mosaic that you can take home as a wonderful souvenir of a day you will never forget.
