How Giordano Bruno was betrayed in Venice<\/h2>\n

If you ask where the story of Giordano Bruno ends, most people will immediately answer: in Rome.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But this story began in a completely different city.<\/p>\n

In Venice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The teacher who came to the student<\/h3>\n

IN In 1591<\/strong> Giordano Bruno came to Venice at the invitation of Giovanni Mocenigo, a wealthy Venetian aristocrat. Mocenigo was eager to learn from Bruno. art of memory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

By then, Bruno was already famous throughout Europe: a former monk, a philosopher, a man with views on the universe that were utterly unbelievable for his time. Mocenigo hoped to become his disciple.<\/p>\n

Bruno settled in his house not far from San Samuele<\/strong> and started to study with him.<\/p>\n

And then everything went completely differently than Mocenigo had imagined.<\/p>\n

When the student wanted a miracle<\/h3>\n

Mocenigo seems to have imagined the art of memory as almost magical:<\/p>\n

Learn the system and you can remember everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But instead of the promised miracle, Bruno offered what real teachers usually offer: work. A lot. For a long time. And seriously.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Gradually, conflicts arose between them. Then Bruno decided to leave Venice. He was planning to go to Frankfurt.<\/p>\n

And then something happened that changed his fate forever.<\/p>\n

The Night the Student Became a Traitor<\/h2>\n

On the night of May 22\u201323, 1592<\/strong> Bruno had to leave the house. But Mocenigo decided he wasn't going to let his teacher go. The servants received orders. lock the doors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Thus the student turned his teacher into a prisoner. The next day, Mocenigo wrote a denunciation in Venetian Inquisition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And Bruno was arrested.<\/p>\n

The charges were serious.<\/h3>\n

The denunciation included accusations of denying the Trinity, doubting the divinity of Christ, believing in the transmigration of souls, and ideas about the infinity of the Universe and multiple worlds.<\/p>\n

Today, some of these ideas may sound almost like science fiction. But in the 16th century, it was a completely different story.<\/p>\n

Bruno tried to explain that he was speaking as a philosopher and that his reasoning should not be taken as a direct denial of the Christian faith.<\/p>\n

But the matter has already gone far beyond the usual conflict between teacher and student.<\/p>\n

And here Venice surprises<\/h3>\n

The most interesting thing is - Venice was in no hurry to give Bruno to Rome. <\/strong>The Venetian Republic valued its independence very much and did not like it when anyone interfered in its internal affairs.<\/p>\n

Bruno found himself under Venetian jurisdiction. But Rome insisted on his extradition. Negotiations began. And eventually, Venice relented.<\/p>\n

IN February 1593<\/strong> Giordano Bruno was sent to Rome.<\/p>\n

And it was this decision that became the turning point.<\/p>\n

Seven years before the fire<\/h2>\n

What followed was almost seven years in prison. Interrogations. Attempts to force Bruno to recant his views.<\/p>\n

He refused.<\/p>\n

February 17, 1600<\/strong> Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake Campo de' Fiori<\/strong> in Rome.<\/p>\n

This is how the story that we usually remember ended.<\/p>\n

But it begins - here in Venice.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And you know what\u2019s especially interesting?<\/h3>\n

When we walk through Venice today, there is almost nothing to remind us of what happened.<\/p>\n

The House of Mocenigo exists.<\/strong><\/p>\n

San Samuele too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Boats navigate the canals.<\/p>\n

Tourists take pictures of the palaces.<\/p>\n

The city lives its normal life.<\/p>\n

And once upon a time a man came here to his student to teach him the art of memory.<\/p>\n

And he ended up being locked in his house and handed over to the Inquisition.<\/p>\n

That's why Venice can't just be seen.<\/h3>\n

Because behind every facade there may be a story you never even suspected.<\/p>\n

Sometimes - art history.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it's a love story.<\/p>\n

Sometimes - the history of science.<\/p>\n

And sometimes - a story of betrayal that ends a few years later at the stake in Rome.<\/strong><\/p>\n
