They need to be experienced. see, feel and remember<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The story of Marcantonio Bragadin is exactly like that.<\/p>\n This is a story of courage, loyalty, siege, betrayal and the terrible price a man paid for refusing to break.<\/p>\n Marcantonio Bragadin was born in Venice in In 1523<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He came from a patrician family, trained as a lawyer, and served the Venetian Republic in various administrative and later military positions.<\/p>\n IN In 1569<\/strong> He was appointed captain of the Kingdom of Cyprus, based in Famagusta, then a Venetian possession.<\/p>\n And just a year later, something began that would forever inscribe his name in history.<\/p>\n IN In 1570<\/strong> The Ottoman Empire began the conquest of Cyprus.<\/p>\n After the fall of Nicosia Famagusta remained the last major Venetian centre that continued to resist.<\/strong><\/p>\n Bragadin led the defense. He distributed supplies, maintained discipline, organized repairs to the fortifications, and prepared the city for assault.<\/p>\n The Ottoman army besieged Famagusta for almost year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n But the defenders continued to hold out.<\/p>\n Eventually, supplies ran out. Continuing the defense became virtually impossible.<\/p>\n Bragadin agreed to negotiate with the Ottoman commander Lala Mustafa Pasha<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The terms of the capitulation provided for the safety of the population and the defenders of the city.<\/p>\n August 1, 1571<\/strong> the capitulation was signed.<\/p>\n It seemed that after almost a year of siege, the worst was already behind us.<\/p>\n But that was just the beginning.<\/p>\n After the surrender of the city, Bragadin was taken into custody.<\/p>\n He was brutally mutilated and then locked in a small cage for twelve days in the blazing sun, with almost no food or water.<\/p>\n On the fourth day he was offered freedom in exchange for accepting Islam.<\/p>\n Bragadin refused.<\/strong><\/p>\n On August 17, 1571, he was executed.<\/p>\n The following details are among the most brutal pages in the history of the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus.<\/p>\n Bragadin was tortured, paraded through the streets of Famagusta, and then tied to an ancient column.<\/p>\n He was killed and his body was dismembered.<\/p>\n His skin was removed and used as political trophy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Bragadin's remains were stuffed, dressed in a Venetian officer's uniform, and displayed for several days in Famagusta as a symbol of victory.<\/p>\n This trophy was later sent to Constantinople.<\/p>\n But Bragadin's story did not end there.<\/p>\n IN In 1580<\/strong> Bragadin's skin was stolen from the Constantinople arsenal by Geronimo Polidori, a young barber from Verona.<\/p>\n He delivered her to Venice.<\/p>\n At first, the relic was kept in the church San Gregorio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And in In 1596<\/strong> transferred to the basilica Santi Giovanni e Paolo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n There she remains today.<\/p>\n His fame is not only associated with his tragic death.<\/p>\n First of all - with defense of Famagusta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The city, which was in extremely difficult circumstances, managed to resist the huge Ottoman army for almost a year.<\/p>\n This required considerable effort and time from the Ottomans. And Famagusta's resistance had consequences far beyond Cyprus.<\/p>\n While the city held out, the Christian states had time to prepare their fleets.<\/p>\n Soon it took place Battle of Lepanto<\/strong> \u2014 one of the largest naval battles of the 16th century, in which the fleet of the Holy League inflicted a heavy defeat on the Ottoman fleet.<\/p>\n Marcantonio Bragadin died in In 1571<\/strong>.<\/p>\n More than four and a half centuries have passed.<\/p>\n Venice has changed.<\/p>\n The Venetian Republic disappeared.<\/p>\n States, borders, armies and the very way of waging war have changed.<\/p>\n But Bragadin's name remained.<\/p>\n Not because he won.<\/p>\n He didn't win.<\/strong><\/p>\n Famagusta has fallen.<\/p>\n But it showed that even a doomed city can resist much longer than expected.<\/p>\n Sometimes history doesn't remember those who won.<\/p>\n And those, who didn't break.<\/strong><\/p>\n That's why, when you enter Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice, it's worth remembering more than just the name on the memorial plaque.<\/p>\n Behind him stands a man who defended a remote Venetian city in Cyprus for almost a year \u2013 and then paid a terrible price for his loyalty.<\/p>\n Famagusta is a thing of the past.<\/strong><\/p>\n And Bragadin remained in Venice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Marcantonio Bragadin: 455 Years of Greatness Etched in History.
